In 2016, the University of Chicago Center for International Studies celebrates its 50th anniversary.  In furtherance of the Center’s decades-long legacy of advancing scholarship and understanding on world issues, we are pleased to announce, “Thinking Globally: International Studies and the Global Turn in the Social Sciences,” a series of events that will critically examine the global scale and global stakes of contemporary research.

Recent approaches to globalization, climate change, inequality and more have underscored the importance of critical knowledge on the processes and problems that interlink people and regions across the planet.  Through its lectures and events, “Thinking Globally” explores the history, politics, and prospects of this global turn in the social sciences.  The series asks:  What different models of “the global” exist within the social sciences and how have they impacted knowledge production and application?   What historical factors and political conditions have shaped how scholars imagine the globe in their research?  How have emergent concerns on the environment and the economy reshaped global understandings?  In what ways has international studies evolved alongside changing articulations of the global? Please join us as the Center for International Studies takes up these questions and explores the genealogy and promise of global thought.

The series begins on December 1st when distinguished historian Lynn Hunt (UCLA) visits Chicago to speak on, “Thinking Globally in Historical Studies: Prospects and Problems.”   We hope to see you at this and the other “Thinking Globally” events.
