Summer Teacher Institute

The Center for International Studies’ Summer Institutes are intended primarily for elementary through community college educators but open to all interested parties. These multi-day workshops explore various comparative and transnational issues each summer and are often co-sponsored by the Centers for East Asian Studies, East European and Russian/Eurasian Studies, Latin American Studies, Middle Eastern Studies, the South Asia Language and Area Center and the Program on the Global Environment.

Feeding the World: Challenges to Achieving Food Security

This interdisciplinary 3-day institute will explore the concept of global food security. We will discuss the challenges to providing all people with physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, nutritious food.

2011 SUMMER TEACHER INSTITUTE
Migration: Causes & Consequences
June 27-June 29, 2011

This interdisciplinary 3-day institute will explore the causes and consequences of migration. Daily themes addressed will be: Social and Legal Aspects of Migration, Conflict and the Environment, and Economic Factors. Faculty and staff from the University of Chicago and other educational institutions from around the world will speak each day, interspersed with discussions of K-12 curriculum development.

 

2010 SUMMER TEACHER INSTITUTE
Water: An Interdisciplinary Examination of the World's Most Essential Resource
June 28-July 1, 2010

From Turkish dams to Asian carp, the 2010 Summer Teacher Institute gave Chicago educators a thorough primer on teaching the many ways that water, and the lack of it, is shaping our future.

The interdisciplinary 3-day institute explored global water issues, including those that affect the Great Lakes region. Daily topics included: water scarcity, effective water management, and water issues in politics, sanitation, agriculture, and economics. A follow-up curriculum development workshop was held on July 1st.
 

2009 SUMMER TEACHER INSTITUTE
Understanding the Global Economy: Bringing the World Market into your Classroom
June 22-24, 2009

This year CIS presented a three-day institute on the Global Economy, in conjunction with the University of Chicago East Asian, Southern Asian, Latin American, East European and Russian Eurasian, and Middle Eastern Area Studies Centers. The goal of the institute was to provide teachers with the tools to successfully teach issues pertaining to the Global Economy, specifically: Markets, Trade and Globalization, Impacts of Globalization, and The Current Global Financial Crisis.

Intended primarily for elementary through community college educators (but open to all interested parties), the Institute addressed each theme through a series of presentations, discussions, and small group activities. Attendees received lessons and resources for curriculum building. In addition, a follow-up curriculum development workshop was held on June 25th.
 

2008 SUMMER TEACHER INSTITUTE
Climate Change: Biological & Social Implications
June 23-25, 2008

In June 2008 CIS presented a three-day institute on biological and social aspects of climate change. The institute, organized in collaboration with the area centers, was designed for K-16 educators interested in bringing climate change issues into their curriculum. The institute featured presentations by scientists and policy experts with both topical and regional foci as well as panel discussions and small group activities.

The University of Chicago Sustainability Council featured an article about the Institute, and the Climate Change Institute website remains available as a resource for participants and others working to develop climate change curriculum.
