Access to nutritious food is a luxury unknown by approximately one billion people worldwide. A broken global food system continues to result in the lack of equal food distribution to the growing population. Across the globe, food prices are elevated. And at a time when more than one in four people are living on less than $1.25 a day, there can be no doubt about the seriousness of needing to reexamine how to adequately feed the world.
This interdisciplinary 3-day institute will explore the concept of global food security. We will discuss the challenges to providing all people with physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, nutritious food.
Faculty, staff, and graduate students from the University of Chicago and other educational institutions from around the country will speak each day. Intended primarily for elementary through community college educators, but open to all interested parties, the Institute will address each theme through a series of presentations and discussions of curriculum development.
